Weather in Reno/Tahoe Nevada breaks 128 year record

It was announced a few days ago that December 2011 was the driest in 128 years.  This morning I decided to take a walk with my dogs and go down the Galena trail that runs thru Galena Forest Estates and Montreux golf and County club, down to Callahan park. The walk took me about 2 hour there and back.  Never have I seen the trail with not a sign of snow in January, the creek was running steady with a few frozen spots.

It has also been a record-setting couple of weeks in terms of temperatures, especially up at Lake Tahoe. Since Xmas day we have set four high-temperature records in Reno, however up at the lake it has been even more impressive.  In the 10 days after Xmas, nine high-temperature records fell at South lake Tahoe.  Yesterday’s high in Reno was 59 and today it will reach a high of 63.

For all those gardeners it is important to remember that trees that were planted in summer last year should be watered as they will die with theses high temperatures and no precipitation. I noticed today at Montreux they were even watering the grass and believe it or not the Jack Nickalaus Signature golf course  is still open for play.
